Dhaka, Jun 04 (V7N) – Shamit Som, a former Canadian international, has arrived in Bangladesh to represent the national football team. The midfielder landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 5:10 AM on Wednesday via a Turkish Airlines flight.
Shamit Som becomes the latest expatriate footballer to join the red and green, following in the footsteps of Hamza Chowdhury and Fahmedul Islam, who have already begun training with the Bangladesh team.
What sets Shamit apart is his unique distinction: he is the first Bangladeshi-origin footballer to play for the Canada National Team, having featured in three matches for the North American side. However, he has now switched allegiance, choosing to represent his ancestral homeland.
“I am looking forward to playing in the Bangladesh jersey,” Shamit told reporters upon arrival. “I am expecting something good in the AFC Asian Cup against Singapore.”
The Bangladesh national team is set to face Singapore in an AFC Asian Cup Qualifier on June 10 at the National Stadium, preceded by a friendly match against Bhutan on June 4. Head coach Javier Cabrera announced a 26-member squad for the two fixtures on May 28, which includes Shamit Som.
The inclusion of international talents like Shamit is seen as a promising step toward strengthening the national squad ahead of crucial international competitions.
