Miami, June 20 (V7N) — Brazilian side Botafogo shocked Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) with a historic 1-0 victory in their second match of the FIFA Club World Cup. With two consecutive wins, Botafogo now lead Group B with 6 points, while PSG sit joint second alongside Atletico Madrid with 3 points each.
Botafogo’s victory ended a 13-year drought for South American clubs, who had failed to defeat any European club in competitive matches during that period.
Despite PSG’s dominance in possession, passing, and attacking statistics, it was Botafogo who made their chances count. In the 36th minute, Jefferson Savarino sent a long pass forward, which Igor Jesus controlled masterfully between two PSG defenders before slotting the ball into the bottom-left corner past Gianluigi Donnarumma.
PSG responded with relentless attacks but struggled with finishing. Out of 16 attempts, only 2 shots were on target. By contrast, Botafogo’s 4 shots were all on target, underlining their clinical performance.
The win sparked wild celebrations among Botafogo fans, as the club not only took command of their group but also restored South American pride on the global stage.
