Former Australian Test wicketkeeper Matthew Wade has announced his retirement from red-ball cricket but will continue playing shorter formats of the game.

The 36-year-old revealed his decision on Friday ahead of Tasmania's Sheffield Shield final against Western Australia, marking his 166th and final first-class match.

Wade clarified that his retirement wasn't due to a lack of form or contribution but rather the emergence of younger players.

Having played 36 Tests as both a wicketkeeper and batter from 2012 to 2021, Wade will focus on one-day and Twenty20 cricket moving forward.

He sees this shift as an opportunity to prioritize fitness and longevity in the shorter format.Wade has postponed his Indian Premier League commitments to participate in the Shield final.
