Sports Desk, Mar 22 (V7N) – Speculation surrounding the future of Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the Indian Premier League continues to grow, with former Chennai Super Kings star Robin Uthappa predicting that the 2026 season could mark the end of Dhoni’s illustrious IPL career.
Although Dhoni has already stepped down from captaincy, he remains the central figure and guiding force behind Chennai Super Kings. Speaking at a recent event, Uthappa suggested that Dhoni may gradually transition into a mentoring role rather than continuing as a full-time player.
“2026 is probably his last year in the yellow jersey. This year, I see him more as a mentor than a player. He could even move down the batting order from number seven to eight,” Uthappa said, adding that Dhoni is likely preparing to step away from active competition.
The discussion also touched on leadership within the franchise. Amid rumors linking Sanju Samson with a potential captaincy role, Uthappa dismissed the idea, emphasizing the need to back current skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has been leading the side since 2024.
“I don’t think it would be right to hand over captaincy to someone new. Ruturaj needs time. He is gradually stepping out of Dhoni’s shadow, and it’s important to see how he handles the team independently,” he added.
Despite being in the latter stages of his career, Dhoni delivered a remarkable performance in the 2025 season, becoming the first wicketkeeper in IPL history to reach 200 dismissals. His enduring impact continues to shape the team’s direction both on and off the field.
As Chennai Super Kings look toward the future, Dhoni’s possible departure raises a key question for fans: will 2026 truly be the final chapter of one of cricket’s most iconic careers, or does “Mahi” still have more to offer?
