Rabat, Jan 15 (V7N) — Goalkeeper Yacine Bounou emerged as the hero as host nation Morocco advanced to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), defeating Nigeria 4–2 on penalties after a goalless draw in the semi-final on Sunday.

The tense encounter remained scoreless throughout regulation time and extra time before being decided by a penalty shootout at the packed stadium in Rabat. Morocco’s goalkeeper Bounou produced a stunning performance, saving two Nigerian spot-kicks to seal victory for his side.

The Al-Hilal goalkeeper comfortably denied attempts from Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemachi, while also making a crucial save during open play to keep Morocco level during the match.

Forward Youssef En-Nesyri calmly converted the decisive penalty, sparking wild celebrations among home supporters and sending Morocco into their first Afcon final in decades.

The win moves Morocco one step closer to their first African title in 50 years, having last lifted the trophy in 1976.

Morocco will face defending champions Senegal—winners of the 2021 edition—in the final, scheduled to be held in Rabat on Sunday, January 18.

Meanwhile, Nigeria will compete against Egypt in the third-place playoff match.
