Buenos Aires, Mar 18 (V7N) – Sergio Romero, Argentina’s long-time goalkeeper and one of the most trusted figures for the national team, has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 39.
Romero represented Argentina in 96 matches between 2009 and 2018, including a memorable run to the 2014 World Cup final and two consecutive Copa America finals, where his performances became a symbol of reliability and calm under pressure.
At club level, Romero spent several years at Manchester United, earning the nickname “shoot-out specialist” for his standout penalty saves, achieving 39 clean sheets whenever he played. He also guarded the goal for Valencia and Boca Juniors during his long career.
The 2008 Olympic gold medalist became a free agent last December due to injuries and declining form, and has now made the decision to retire from playing.
Despite hanging up his gloves, Romero is not leaving football entirely. He plans to transition into coaching, with his new goal being to guide the next generation of players from the sidelines.
