Bangladesh concluded their 2026 FIFA World Cup and Asian Cup Qualifiers campaign with a heavy 4-0 defeat to Lebanon in their final Group I match at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium in Doha on Tuesday night.
This loss meant that Bangladesh finished the qualifiers with only one point from six matches, while Australia, having participated in the World Cup five times consecutively, topped the group.
In the match, Bangladesh conceded two goals in each half, struggling to create any significant pressure on Lebanon. This was in stark contrast to their previous home match in November, where they managed a 1-1 draw against the 120th-ranked Lebanese team, thanks to a goal by Sheikh Morsalin. Despite the support from local Bangladeshi expatriates in the stands, Jamal Bhuyan and his team were unable to replicate that performance.
Lebanon's victory was spearheaded by Hassan Maatouk, who scored a hat-trick, and Nader Matar, who added one goal.
The match began poorly for Bangladesh, with Shakil Hossain committing a foul in the danger zone in the fifth minute, resulting in a yellow card and a penalty for Lebanon. Maatouk converted the penalty with ease, giving Lebanon an early lead.
Lebanon extended their lead just before halftime in the 45+2nd minute when Nader Matar's well-placed shot found the net, leaving Bangladesh's goalkeeper Mitul Marma with no chance.
In the second half, Lebanon continued to dominate, with Maatouk scoring his second goal four minutes after the restart and completing his hat-trick in the 60th minute.
Despite several substitutions by Bangladesh's coach, the team could not recover. Rakib Hossain had a notable chance but missed, sending his shot over the crossbar. The remainder of the match saw Bangladesh unable to mount a comeback, concluding their campaign on a disappointing note.
