The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has unveiled the final 15-member squad for the upcoming ACC Women’s Asia Cup 2024, set to take place in Dambulla, Sri Lanka from July 19-28. This edition of the tournament will see the participation of eight teams, one more than the previous edition in 2022, and will be played in the Twenty20 format.
The participating teams will include the Asian powerhouses Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, who will join the tournament directly in the semi-finals. They will be accompanied by the top four teams of the Women’s Premier Cup 2024, namely UAE, Malaysia, Nepal, and Thailand.
The Bangladesh women's team, led by Nigar Sultana Joty as the captain and Nahida Akter as the vice-captain, comprises a formidable lineup including Murshida Khatun, Dilara Akter, Jahanara Alam, Rumana Ahmed, Ritu Moni, Marufa Akter, Shorna Akter, Rabeya Khan, Sultana Khatun, Rubya Haider Jhelik, Shorifa Khatun, Ishma Tanjim, and Sabikun Nahar Jesmin. Additionally, four stand-by cricketers, Taj Nehar, Fahima Khatun, Sobhana Mostary, and Puja Chakrabortty, have been named.
The tournament is expected to be a thrilling affair, with the top-two teams from each group advancing to the semi-finals on July 26, leading up to the title clash on July 28. The expansion of the tournament to include eight teams reflects the growing interest and participation in women's cricket across Asia, as highlighted by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president, Jay Shah.
