Sylhet, Sept 7 (V7N) – Diabetic Service Day, observed annually on September 6 in Bangladesh, marks a significant milestone in the country’s healthcare history. The day commemorates the contributions of National Professor Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim, who pioneered diabetes care through the establishment of the Diabetic Association of Bangladesh. The initiative aims to raise public awareness about diabetes prevention and management, expand healthcare services, and promote health education among the population.

On Sunday, September 7, Sylhet Diabetic Association organized a discussion meeting to mark the 36th death anniversary of Prof. Dr. Ibrahim and the Diabetic Service Day. The session was presided over by the association’s Vice-President, Professor Dr. Shibbir Ahmad Shibli, and moderated by Senior Medical Officer Dr. Md. Abdul Moktadir Qureshi of Sylhet Diabetic and General Hospital. The event began with a recitation from the Quran by Hafiz Maulana Md. Shah Alam, the Imam of Sylhet Collectorate Mosque.

During the discussion, esteemed life member and columnist journalist Aftab Chowdhury urged diabetic patients not to panic, emphasizing that diabetes is neither contagious nor a deadly epidemic. He noted that with discipline, regular exercise, and proper medication, patients can manage diabetes effectively and lead a healthy life.

Acting General Secretary Shibbrot Bhaumik Chandan highlighted that elevated blood sugar is the primary indicator of diabetes. He stressed the importance of maintaining a disciplined lifestyle, adopting a balanced diet, and engaging in regular physical activity to control blood sugar levels.

Welcome remarks were delivered by Acting Superintendent Dr. A.T.M. Zafar Ahmed, and the vote of thanks was given by Residential Medical Officer Dr. Niharendu Das. The event was attended by doctors, hospital staff, patients, and invited guests.

Following the discussion, a doa (prayer) session was held for the peace and forgiveness of Prof. Dr. Ibrahim’s departed soul, led by Hafiz Maulana Md. Shah Alam.

As part of the Diabetic Service Day programs, free diabetes screening was conducted at the hospital premises from 10:30 am for attending patients. The free screening initiative was inaugurated by executive committee member and columnist journalist Aftab Chowdhury.

The day highlighted the importance of diabetes awareness, early detection, and community health support, reflecting Prof. Dr. Ibrahim’s lifelong contributions to medical service in Bangladesh.
