Pabna, Dec 14 (V7N) – Pabna General Hospital has launched a 10-bed Neonatal Special Care Unit (SCANU) on its second floor as a fully local initiative to enhance neonatal healthcare services. The unit was inaugurated on Saturday afternoon by pediatric specialist Dr. Nitish Kumar Kundu and Pabna Press Club President Akhtaruzzaman Akhtar.
The opening ceremony, chaired by Assistant Director Dr. Rafiqul Hasan, included remarks from several prominent medical professionals, including Associate Professor Dr. Parimal Kumar Pal, President of Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB), Pabna branch Dr. Taslimul Arefin Ratan, Orthopedic Surgeon and President of Pabna Medical College Teachers’ Association Dr. Masudur Rahman Prince, General Secretary of Teachers’ Association Associate Professor Dr. Sirajul Islam, Associate Professor (Dentistry) Dr. Serajul Alam Rakib, gynecologist Dr. Sareba Sabera Sultana Asmani, and pediatric specialist Dr. Jannatul Fourdous, among others.
Dr. Rafiqul Hasan stated that despite several constraints, the unit was established locally with the support of DAB and a few dedicated doctors. He expressed hope that the unit would provide life-saving treatment to many critically ill newborns.
Pediatric specialist Dr. Nitish Kumar Kundu emphasized the necessity of such a unit for the hospital. He explained that newborns suffering from jaundice, premature births, low birth weight, or undernourishment can now receive proper medical care and recover in this unit.
Pabna Press Club President Akhtaruzzaman Akhtar remarked that this initiative demonstrates the impact of goodwill and encouraged affluent members of society to contribute generously to public welfare projects.
The SCANU is expected to significantly improve neonatal survival rates in the region, providing specialized medical care to vulnerable infants immediately after birth.
