Cox's Bazar, Sep 12 (V7N) - Doctors at Cox's Bazar District Hospital have organized a protest in reaction to an assault on a physician, demanding immediate legal action against the culprits and enhanced security measures for hospital staff. Interns, students, nurses, and other hospital personnel also participated in the demonstration.

The protest, which took place on Thursday, September 12, began at the hospital and then moved to form a human chain in front of the police superintendent’s office. The protesters later returned to the hospital and staged a demonstration outside the superintendent’s office.

Intern Dr. Shah Talal Mahmood Dihan remarked, “Our colleague was brutally attacked, and the hospital was vandalized. Yet, the hospital management has not filed a complaint. A case must be registered today. If security for doctors is not guaranteed, we will not resume work at the hospital.”

During the protest at the superintendent’s office, Dr. Mong Ting Nyo, the hospital superintendent, addressed the students’ concerns and assured reporters that a committee has been established to investigate the vandalism. They will collect evidence and file a report by the end of the day. Additionally, if doctor safety is not assured, the hospital will only provide emergency services.

The attack occurred on the night of September 10, when Dr. Saajib Kazi, a medical officer working in the ICU, was assaulted following the death of a patient. CCTV footage shows that after the patient’s death, relatives entered the ICU, vandalized the doctor’s room, and attacked Dr. Saajib. The assault continued as he was dragged down from the fourth floor. Other doctors intervened to rescue him.

As a result of the attack, doctors have announced a complete shutdown of hospital services, except for emergencies.
