Barguna, Sep 19 (V7N) - The coastal district of Barguna is witnessing a sharp rise in dengue cases, leaving residents increasingly alarmed. In the past month, nearly 50 patients have been hospitalized. According to data from Barguna General Hospital on Thursday (September 19), 46 dengue patients are currently under treatment.

While many regions in Bangladesh saw dengue outbreaks shortly after July, Barguna has experienced a surge in cases since mid-August this year. To manage the situation, the hospital has set up separate units for male and female patients to ensure proper care and contain the spread. However, despite the rising number of cases, no significant steps have been taken yet to control the mosquito population, including spraying insecticides.

A visit to Barguna General Hospital revealed that patients with fever are being admitted as soon as dengue is confirmed through tests. However, many patients have expressed concerns over the lack of regular medical attention. Some have reported waiting for three to four days before being seen by a doctor, with nurses providing most of the care.

In the last 24 hours, 46 patients have been admitted with dengue, including 24 men, 12 women, and 10 children, according to hospital records. Over the past year, a total of 524 patients have been treated for dengue at the hospital, with nearly 350 of them admitted in the last month alone.

Abdul Karim, from Kakchira in Patharghata, has been hospitalized for a week due to dengue. His wife shared, "When my husband developed a fever, we had him tested outside, and it came back positive for dengue. We then admitted him to the hospital, where we received all the necessary treatment and medications. He is now improving."

Another patient, Md. Monir Hossain, told Dhaka Post, "When I was first admitted, my platelet count was 68,000. Despite being here for four days, I still haven't seen a doctor. Today (Tuesday), my platelet count dropped to 27,000, and now my family and I are uncertain whether to stay here or seek better treatment elsewhere."

Hospital Superintendent Dr. A.K.M. Najmul Ahsan acknowledged the rise in dengue cases, stating, "Currently, we have 355 patients admitted, of whom 46 are dengue cases, including men, women, and children. Although this year’s total number of dengue patients in Barguna is still lower compared to last year, we are now in the peak season for dengue. Our doctors have been instructed accordingly, and we have all necessary resources available for treatment. In cases where a patient’s condition worsens, we refer them for advanced care."
