On Monday, the prime minister of Ukraine appealed to both the public and private sectors in Japan to increase aid for the nation's rehabilitation, pledging a "economic miracle" following the conclusion of the almost two-year conflict with Russia.
Denys Shmygal told a gathering of over 300 government and corporate officials from Japan and Ukraine, "Since the full-scale invasion started, Japan has provided Ukraine with over $10 billion of various support," making it the fourth-biggest donor.
Through an interpreter, Shmygal stated, "Millions of Ukrainian people have been able to survive thanks to this funding during this terrible war caused by Russia."The organizers stated without providing any details that Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, was also scheduled to speak to the assembly in Tokyo via video connection, but this was canceled.
Japan was able to assist in bridging the gaps in defense equipment among Ukraine's primary arms suppliers, including the United States, last year when it loosened export restrictions on completed items.
Tokyo has further sent Ukraine "non-lethal support" in the form of transportable power generators and aircraft detection devices.
The World Bank, European Union, and United Nations together released a report last week that put the expected cost of Ukraine's rehabilitation over the next ten years at $486 billion, with $15 billion of that amount coming just in 2024.
A joint statement on Monday stated that Prime Minister Fumio Kishida "reaffirmed Japan's commitment to support Ukraine and its people in defending its freedom and independence and restoring territorial integrity."
"The primary force behind Ukraine's restoration efforts is the private sector... We would want to collaborate with Japan for Ukraine's reconstruction and modernization. We want each and every one of you to be a part of Ukraine's economic miracle," Shmygal declared.
Businesses who make current investments in the Ukrainian economy stand to enjoy unbelievable advantages and prospects in the next years. The prosperity of Ukraine is not just our achievement but also your success."
According to the statement, he also reaffirmed his willingness to give "the necessary long-term assistance to ensure the stability of Ukraine's economy".
The two parties inked many agreements on government improvement, agriculture, demining, and infrastructure reconstruction.
Japan recently consented to loosen visa requirements for business travelers from Ukraine.
The summit takes place while US military aid worth $60 billion is still stuck in Congress and after Russian forces retook the Ukrainian bastion of Avdiivka in the east.
