WASHINGTON, D.C. – Dec. 15 (V7N)- President Joe Biden emphasized the enduring strength of the U.S.-South Korea alliance in a phone call Saturday with South Korea’s interim leader, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, following the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol.

Biden praised South Korea’s commitment to democratic values in the wake of Yoon’s ousting, stating that the U.S.-ROK alliance remains pivotal for stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

"President Biden expressed his confidence that the Alliance will remain the linchpin for peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region during Acting President Han's tenure," the White House said in an official statement.

The U.S. president also reaffirmed Washington's "ironclad commitment" to the people of South Korea, applauding the resilience of the country’s democracy amid one of its most turbulent political crises in decades.

Political Crisis in South Korea

South Korea’s National Assembly voted to impeach Yoon Suk Yeol on Saturday, accusing the president of violating democratic norms with his controversial martial law declaration. The impeachment, which garnered widespread public and political support, has thrown the nation into political uncertainty.

Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, a seasoned technocrat, has assumed the role of acting president as the country’s constitutional court begins deliberations on whether Yoon should be permanently removed from office.

Under South Korea's legal framework, the court has 180 days to reach a decision. In the meantime, Han will lead the country, overseeing key domestic and international affairs, including South Korea’s vital alliance with the United States.

Biden and Han: Reinforcing Bilateral Ties

During their call, President Biden reaffirmed the U.S.’s unwavering support for South Korea, a nation that remains a key ally in countering regional threats, including North Korea.

The White House noted Biden’s appreciation for Han’s leadership during this transitional period, underscoring the shared values of democracy and the rule of law that underpin the bilateral relationship.

"President Biden expressed his appreciation for the resiliency of democracy and the rule of law in the Republic of Korea," the statement added, signaling confidence in Han’s ability to maintain stability during his interim presidency.

Looking Ahead

As South Korea navigates the fallout of Yoon’s impeachment, the focus now shifts to the constitutional court’s verdict and Han’s ability to lead during this critical juncture. The U.S.-South Korea alliance, strengthened during decades of shared challenges, appears poised to remain steadfast amid the crisis.
