LONDON, Dec 16, 2024 (V7N) -The British government has announced a £50 million ($63 million) humanitarian aid package to support "the most vulnerable" Syrians within Syria and in neighboring countries Lebanon and Jordan.

Foreign Minister David Lammy said in a statement on Sunday, "We're committed to supporting the Syrian people as they chart a new course."

The majority of the funds will be directed to UN agencies, focusing on scaling up humanitarian assistance during a period of heightened need. The aid will also help sustain essential public services in Syria, which have been severely strained following years of conflict and instability.

Lammy emphasized Britain’s ongoing commitment to fostering stability in Syria, stating that the UK will work diplomatically to promote better governance. "It is vital that the future Syrian government brings together all groups to establish the stability and respect the Syrian people deserve," he said.

Additional Support for Chemical Weapons Oversight

In a separate announcement, the UK pledged an additional £120,000 to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to support its work in Syria. This move underscores Britain’s commitment to ensuring accountability and preventing the use of chemical weapons in the region.

The humanitarian aid comes at a critical time, as the Syrian population continues to face immense challenges due to conflict, displacement, and economic collapse. The UK's support aims to address both immediate needs and long-term recovery efforts for the Syrian people.
