Washington, D.C., Dec 18 (V7N)— The Bangladesh Embassy in Washington celebrated the 53rd anniversary of Bangladesh's victory in the Liberation War through a series of discussions and cultural performances on Tuesday. Newly appointed Ambassador Asad Alam Siam inaugurated the event, paying homage to the spirit and sacrifices of the Liberation War in his welcome address.

Ambassador Siam highlighted the historic struggle for Bangladesh’s independence, stating, “The emergence of independent Bangladesh came through a long struggle and war. This year, the celebration of victory after the 1924 revolution holds a unique significance.” He further acknowledged the contributions of the United States to Bangladesh's development and democracy and expressed gratitude to the current government led by Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus for its efforts to build a prosperous nation.

US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South Asian Affairs Nicole Chulik, speaking as a special guest, reaffirmed the United States' support for Bangladesh's interim government and its reform initiatives. She remarked, “The United States supports all the reform efforts of the interim government led by Professor Yunus. Bangladesh’s victory and its sacrifices are an extraordinary example to the world.”

Chulik also expressed optimism about Bangladesh’s future, stating, “The United States is proud to be Bangladesh’s largest development partner. We stand by the government’s steps to establish democratic values, protect human rights, and implement reforms.”

Referring to recent discussions between Professor Yunus and US President Joe Biden at the United Nations General Assembly, Chulik emphasised the strengthening of bilateral relations between the two nations.

Ambassador (Designate) Mushfiqul Fazal Ansari delivered a heartfelt speech, recalling the sacrifices of the Liberation War and the July 2024 revolution. He stated, “The 1971 Liberation War was not just a fight for independence; it was a fight for identity, dignity, and democratic values. Similarly, the July 2024 revolution reminds us that the fight for freedom and democracy is ongoing.”

He also noted, “Under the leadership of Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus, our country is on a path toward a brighter future.” Addressing the concerns of expatriates, Ansari pledged improved services at the embassy, stating, “Our remittance warriors deserve to be treated with respect and a welcoming smile when they visit the embassy.”

The event featured notable attendees, including Monica Jacobsen, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor; Ambassador William B. Mylam; and officials from the US National Security Council. A vibrant cultural program, performed by embassy staff, added a festive touch to the occasion, which was attended by a large number of expatriate Bangladeshis.

The celebration served as a reaffirmation of the enduring partnership between Bangladesh and the United States, as well as a commitment to shared values of democracy, freedom, and peace.
