SYDNEY, Jan 8, (V7N) – A tragic seaplane crash off the coast of Western Australia has claimed the lives of three people, including two European tourists and the local pilot, authorities confirmed on Wednesday.
The accident occurred Tuesday evening as the plane departed from Rottnest Island, a popular tourist destination known for its quokkas, small marsupials beloved by visitors.
State Premier Roger Cook confirmed that the victims included a 65-year-old Swiss woman, a 60-year-old Danish man, and the 34-year-old Australian pilot.
Four others survived the crash: a 63-year-old Swiss man, a 58-year-old Danish woman, and an Australian couple in their 60s.
Theseaplane reportedly plunged into the ocean shortly after takeoff, with early unconfirmed reports suggesting it may have clipped a rock.
"Three lives were lost when a seaplane crashed moments after takeoff," Cook said during a press briefing. "The tragedy unfolded in front of many tourists, including families with children who were on the island enjoying the summer holiday."
Emergency teams recovered the wreckage from the sea on Wednesday, but the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Situated about 30 kilometers (18 miles) west of Perth, Rottnest Island is one of Western Australia’s premier tourist attractions, drawing visitors from around the world for its serene beaches and wildlife.
This tragic incident has cast a shadow over the holiday season, with Premier Cook offering condolences to the victims' families and emphasizing the importance of a thorough investigation into the crash.
