Gaza, Jan 19 (V7N) — Following extensive negotiations and delays, the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas has officially taken effect. According to a statement from the Israeli Prime Minister's Office, the ceasefire commenced at 11:15 a.m. local time on Sunday. The development was confirmed by Al Jazeera.

The Israeli government also confirmed it had received a list of prisoners to be released as part of the agreement. A spokesperson for the Qassem Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, Abu Obeida, announced the release of three individuals—Romi Gonen (24), Emily Damari (28), and Doron Shanbar Khair (31)—as part of the prisoner exchange deal.

Tensions escalated on Saturday after a statement by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which some interpreted as a potential warning of renewed conflict. However, the ceasefire came into effect, dispelling fears of immediate escalation and marking a critical step toward de-escalation in the region.

The agreement brings temporary relief to the region, although the long-term stability of the ceasefire remains uncertain amid ongoing tensions.
