Washington, June 30 (V7N) — Former U.S. President Donald Trump has said the United States is ready to ease sanctions against Iran, particularly on its oil exports, if Tehran stops its hostile activities and chooses a peaceful path.
In an interview broadcast on Fox News on Sunday (June 29), Trump stated, “The sanctions are costing us a lot of money, but I am ready to ease them for countries like Iran if they behave well. They can sell their oil and do other things that they want to do.”
Trump’s remarks follow a series of mixed messages over the past week. On June 24, he posted on Truth Social that China would be permitted to buy oil from Iran. However, a day later, he clarified that while Iran needed revenue to rebuild after its conflict with Israel, he had no intention of cutting off Iran’s oil revenues entirely.
On June 27, Trump announced a temporary suspension of sanction relief, citing recent statements by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei as the reason for halting the process.
During Sunday’s interview, Trump denied claims that his administration had secretly permitted China to purchase sanctioned Iranian oil. He maintained that U.S. sanctions remain in effect but added, “If they work, if they are peaceful, and if they prove that they will not do any more harm, then I will lift the sanctions.”
Trump also highlighted the Abraham Accords, which normalized relations between Israel and several Arab nations during his administration. He suggested Iran had been the primary barrier to broader peace in the region. “I thought there would come a time when Iran would join the Abraham Accords. Frankly, that would be better for them than what they are now,” he said.
Trump hinted that new countries have shown interest in joining the accords following Iran’s recent setbacks, but he did not disclose specific names.
