Idaho, June 30 (V7N) – Two firefighters were killed and several others injured after gunmen opened fire on first responders battling a wildfire in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, authorities said on Sunday. The tragedy unfolded at Canfield Mountain Natural Area, a popular hiking destination on the city’s east side.

The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that at least one or more shooters, armed with high-powered rifles, fired at law enforcement and emergency personnel. Sheriff Norris stated, “We don’t know if there were one, two, three, or four shooters. Officers reported shots coming from multiple directions.”

The blaze, covering about half an acre, is suspected to have been deliberately set to target first responders. An audio recording from Kootenai County Fire and EMS captured a firefighter saying the fire appeared to be a trap.

Authorities have not yet released the total number of injured. Many hikers and residents remain trapped on the mountain as the situation continues to unfold. Sheriff Norris warned, “This is likely going to be a multi-day operation. The next few hours could be very difficult. I hope someone can take a clear shot and neutralize the attacker, as they are not showing any signs of surrendering.”

The attackers are reportedly using modern sporting rifles. The FBI is deploying units to assist with tactical operations, while local and federal agencies investigate.

Governor Brad Little condemned the attack, saying, “This brutal attack on our brave firefighters is reprehensible. We await further information and ask everyone to pray for them and their families.”

Residents have been urged to remain indoors and avoid the area to allow law enforcement and firefighters to operate safely.
