Athens, July 4 (V7N) — The island of Crete, one of Greece’s most popular tourist destinations, continues to battle devastating wildfires. As of Thursday (July 3), more than 5,000 residents and tourists have been evacuated to safe shelters as flames spread rapidly across the island.

Over 100 firefighters, aided by helicopters, drones, and firefighting vehicles, are working tirelessly to contain the blaze. However, their efforts are being hampered by strong winds, scorching heat, and dry conditions, which are fueling the inferno.

Meanwhile, another wildfire broke out on Thursday in Rafina, near the capital Athens, blanketing the city’s airport in thick smoke and disrupting operations.

On the other side of the Aegean, Turkey continues to grapple with wildfires that have raged across parts of the country for the past week. In Izmir’s Odemis and Cesme districts, at least two people have died and about 200 homes have been destroyed. Authorities report that most fires have now been brought under control, though vigilance remains high.
