Ankara, Aug 11 (V7N) – A strong earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck northwestern Turkey on Sunday evening, leaving at least one person dead and 29 others injured, according to local authorities.

The quake’s epicenter was located 11 kilometers below the surface, and tremors were felt across several regions, including the provinces of Istanbul and Balıkesir. At least 16 buildings and two mosque minarets collapsed, while numerous residents remain trapped beneath the rubble.

Rescue teams are working around the clock to search for survivors. Officials fear the casualty count may rise as operations continue.

This latest disaster comes as Turkey is still recovering from the catastrophic 7.8-magnitude earthquake in 2023 that claimed more than 53,000 lives.
