Algiers, Aug 16 (V7N) – At least 18 people have died and nine others were seriously injured after a passenger bus plunged from a bridge into a river in Algiers, the capital of Algeria, on Friday afternoon (August 15), AFP reports.
The tragic accident occurred in the Mohammedia district, where the bus fell approximately 10 meters from the bridge into the river. Emergency services and rescue teams arrived promptly, rescuing victims and transporting the injured to local hospitals.
Authorities believe the accident may have been caused by mechanical failure or driver error. Following the incident, Algeria’s Ministry of Transport formed an investigation committee to determine the exact cause.
Algerian President expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and extended condolences to the families of the victims.
