Washington, Oct 24 (V7N) — U.S. President Donald Trump has announced the immediate cancellation of all trade negotiations with neighboring Canada, following a controversy over an advertisement aired by the Ontario provincial government.

In a post on his social media platform Truth Social on Friday (October 24), Trump wrote, “Canada has aired an ad in which former President Ronald Reagan speaks negatively about tariffs. All trade talks with them have been canceled due to Canada’s disgusting behavior.”

The ad that angered Trump reportedly featured archival audio of former U.S. President Ronald Reagan criticizing tariffs, alongside visuals of the New York Stock Exchange and construction cranes adorned with the flags of both the United States and Canada.

According to the BBC, the excerpt of Reagan’s remarks used in the video was taken from a 1987 radio address in which the late president discussed international trade policies and the need for open markets.

President Trump has long been vocal about his stance on trade protectionism. During his first term, he imposed a 35 percent tariff on Canadian imports but allowed exemptions for products covered under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) — the trade pact he signed in place of NAFTA.

Political analysts say this latest move could heighten tensions between Washington and Ottawa, potentially affecting bilateral trade valued at over $700 billion annually. Canadian officials have not yet issued a formal response to Trump’s announcement.
