Dhaka, Dec 02 (V7N) — Russian President Vladimir Putin has claimed that Russian forces have captured two Ukrainian cities — Pokrovsk and Vovchansk. Putin, who visited a military command post on Sunday (November 30), said he received confirmation of the cities’ capture during the visit. The claim was reported by US-based outlet ABC News.

However, Ukraine has firmly rejected the announcement.

Analysts believe Putin’s statement may be aimed at increasing pressure ahead of upcoming diplomatic engagements. On Monday (December 1), the Air Assault Forces of Ukraine’s 7th Rapid Response Corps said that Russian advances on Pokrovsk had been “stopped.” Despite severe damage, Ukrainian forces reportedly still control parts of the strategic city, which has been a focal point of Russian attacks for more than 18 months.

The situation in Vovchansk mirrors Pokrovsk. According to Viktor Tregubov, chief communications officer of Ukraine’s joint forces, Ukrainian troops continue to hold positions in the southern part of the city. He emphasized that the city is “not fully occupied,” though most areas are currently under Russian control.

Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry released a video on its Telegram channel on Monday (November 30) showing the Russian flag being raised in Pokrovsk, reinforcing Moscow’s narrative of territorial gains.
