Bengaluru, Dec 08 (V7N) — At least 25 people were killed in a fire at the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in Arpora, Goa, prompting authorities to launch an investigation and announce compensation for victims.
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant confirmed a magisterial inquiry has been ordered to determine the cause of the fire and hold responsible parties accountable. Six injured individuals are reported to be in stable condition and receiving medical care.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered condolences to the families of the victims and stated that his office will provide compensation of up to 200,000 rupees ($2,200) to each family and 50,000 rupees to the injured.
The blaze broke out at 12:04 a.m. local time, and authorities worked through the night to bring it under control. Police reported that at least four of the deceased were tourists, while 14 were nightclub staff members. All bodies have been recovered.
Goa, a popular coastal destination known for its beaches and scenic hills, attracted approximately 5.5 million tourists in the first half of the year, including around 271,000 international visitors.
Images circulating on social media showed firefighters at the scene and ambulances lined up outside the club, though the authenticity of these images could not be independently verified.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident, while officials emphasize ensuring safety and accountability in the aftermath of the tragedy.
