Tehran, Dec 13 (V7N)- Iranian security forces have arrested prominent human rights activist and 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Nargis Mohammadi, allegedly after physically assaulting her, according to rights groups and her family.
Mohammadi was detained on Friday while attending a memorial service for renowned human rights lawyer Khosrow Alikordi, who was found dead in his office last week. The ceremony was held in the northeastern city of Mashhad, where Mohammadi had gone to pay her last respects.
According to her brother and the Nargis Foundation, Iranian security personnel detained Mohammadi along with several other human rights activists present at the event. Supporters claim that she was beaten before being taken into custody.
The Nargis Foundation has strongly condemned the arrest and demanded the immediate release of Nargis Mohammadi and all other detained activists. The organization described the incident as a serious violation of human rights and freedom of expression.
So far, Iranian authorities have not issued any official statement regarding the arrest.
Nargis Mohammadi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for her tireless struggle against the oppression of women in Iran and her unwavering commitment to defending human rights. She has long been a vocal critic of Iran’s human rights record and has faced repeated arrests, imprisonment, and harassment by the authorities.
