A concerning incident unfolded at Kolkata Airport as two aircraft, belonging to IndiGo and Air India, collided wing-to-wing while on the runway. Although no casualties were reported, both planes sustained damage in the collision.
According to sources at Kolkata Airport, the incident occurred when the IndiGo aircraft struck the Air India plane, which was awaiting clearance to enter the runway. The collision resulted in damage to the wings of both aircraft, as they came dangerously close to each other on the runway.
The Air India flight IX 1866, scheduled for Chennai, was in the process of taxiing onto the runway at around 10:40 am on Wednesday. The aircraft, carrying 163 passengers and 6 cabin crew, was preparing for takeoff from bay no. Meanwhile, the IndiGo flight Six E6152, bound for Darbhanga, was also undergoing preparations for departure from Kolkata. The IndiGo aircraft had 149 passengers and 6 cabin crew on board.
Following the incident, all passengers from both planes were safely disembarked, and arrangements were made to transport them to their respective destinations on alternative flights.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has granted temporary exemption to the pilots of both aircraft from duty pending further investigation into the matter. Authorities have initiated a comprehensive inquiry to ascertain the circumstances leading to the collision and prevent such incidents in the future.
