Washington, Jan 30 (V7N) — US President Donald Trump has said that Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to a week-long pause in airstrikes on major Ukrainian cities, including the capital Kyiv, following a request from Washington due to severe winter conditions.
According to a report by CNN, Trump made the announcement during a cabinet meeting at the White House on Thursday (January 29). However, no official confirmation has yet come from Moscow regarding the reported pause.
President Trump said he requested Russia to suspend airstrikes amid extreme cold and adverse weather, noting that the ongoing attacks were worsening the humanitarian situation. He added that President Putin had agreed to the request.
Temperatures across much of Ukraine, including Kyiv, have fallen below freezing, while recent Russian drone and missile attacks on Ukraine’s power and energy infrastructure have caused widespread electricity shortages and heating problems.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the development, thanking Trump in a post on X (formerly Twitter). He said that halting the attacks during this critical winter period would help preserve electricity and energy supplies and reduce civilian suffering.
The situation remains closely monitored as diplomatic efforts continue amid the ongoing conflict.
