With the 2024 Lok Sabha elections looming ahead, India's political landscape is witnessing intensified activity as the opposition gears up to challenge the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The recent arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has galvanized the opposition, leading to a united front under the banner of 'Democracy Left Tea O', spearheaded by the Congress party.
On Sunday (March 31) in Delhi, the opposition alliance 'India' showcased its strength by rallying together to present a formidable challenge to the BJP. The arrest of Arvind Kejriwal, a vocal critic of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has sparked widespread protests across the country, further fueling the opposition's momentum.
Prominent leaders including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi, along with Jammu and Kashmir leader Farooq Abdullah, participated in the rally. Sunita Kejriwal, wife of the arrested Delhi Chief Minister, and Kalpana Soren, wife of the former Chief Minister of Jharkhand Hemant Soren, also joined the gathering. The opposition coalition has accused the Modi government of orchestrating a crackdown on dissent and attempting to manipulate the electoral process.
Addressing the crowd, Rahul Gandhi warned of dire consequences if the BJP were to emerge victorious in the upcoming elections. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding democracy and voiced concerns over the integrity of the electoral process, calling for transparency and accountability.
The Lok Sabha elections are scheduled to be held in seven phases, with the first phase commencing on April 19 and concluding on June 1. With voting for 543 seats set to take place over this period, the stakes are high as political parties mobilize their resources and rally support from the electorate.
