The United States has finalized a $3 billion agreement to purchase a third squadron of 25 advanced F-35 stealth fighter jets from Lockheed Martin, which will be delivered to Israel in 2028. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant confirmed the deal in a statement on Tuesday.
Minister Galant emphasized the strategic importance of the deal, stating, "The United States and Israel signed this agreement at a time when some of our adversaries have made great efforts to undermine our relationship with our greatest ally. We only strengthened our relationship." He added that the deal serves as a warning to Israel's enemies globally.
With this new acquisition, the number of F-35 jets in Israel's arsenal will increase to 75. The Israeli Defense Ministry detailed that the delivery of the aircraft to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) will commence in 2028, with the US providing three to five aircraft annually.
Israel is currently the only Middle Eastern country equipped with the F-35, the world’s most advanced fighter jet known for its stealth capabilities, intelligence gathering, and ability to execute heavy strikes deep into enemy territory. In May 2018, the Israeli military announced it was the first nation to deploy the F-35 in combat, showcasing its advanced capabilities.
This acquisition underscores the enduring military partnership between the United States and Israel, enhancing Israel's strategic defense capabilities amidst regional tensions.
