Reasi, (June 10, 2024) – Nine people were killed and 33 others injured in a terrorist attack on a bus carrying pilgrims to the Shiva Khoda Cave Temple in Reasi district, Jammu and Kashmir. The tragic incident occurred on Sunday evening when militants opened fire on the bus, causing it to plunge into a deep ditch. Rescue operations were still underway at the time of the last report, according to NDTV.
The bus, en route to the revered temple, came under attack as it traveled through the district. The sudden firing by the terrorists led to the driver losing control, resulting in the bus falling off the road and into a ditch. Special Mahajan, the District Magistrate of Reasi, confirmed the fatalities and injuries, stating that nine pilgrims had died and 33 were wounded. The injured were promptly taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Initial investigations indicate that the driver lost control due to the unexpected gunfire from the militants. Reasi District Superintendent of Police, Mohit Sharma, reported that efforts are ongoing to identify the deceased and injured passengers.
Videos from the scene depict a grim tableau, with bodies scattered on the hillside and the damaged bus precariously positioned. Local residents were seen aiding in the rescue efforts, while ambulances and emergency responders lined the area. Police, army, and paramilitary forces quickly reached the site to assist in the rescue and provide security.
According to police reports, there were no local passengers on the bus. This incident marks the first significant terrorist attack in Reasi district following the recent elections. Although militants have been active in the neighboring districts of Poonch and Rajouri, Reasi had not previously been targeted.
The attack has sparked concerns about the security of religious pilgrimages in the region and the broader implications for peace and stability in Jammu and Kashmir. Authorities are intensifying efforts to track down the perpetrators and ensure the safety of residents and pilgrims alike.
