Kolkata, August 18 -- The Kolkata Police has issued a ban on unlawful assemblies in the vicinity of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal. The ban, effective from Saturday, August 18, to Saturday, August 24, prohibits the gathering of five or more people in the specified area.

This action follows a tragic incident last week where a trainee female doctor was found dead at the medical college, with preliminary investigations suggesting she was raped and murdered. The incident has sparked widespread outrage, leading to protests, including a "Girls' Night Occupy" program held by women in West Bengal, including Kolkata.

The Indian media outlet Anandabazar Patrika reported on Saturday night that the police enforced these guidelines under Section 163 of the Indian Civil Protection Code (formerly Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code). The affected areas include certain roads in the Shyampukur, Ultodanga, and Tala police station jurisdictions, specifically Belgachia Road, JK Mitra Road Crossing, and Shyambazar Panch Mathar Mor.

The decision to impose the ban comes after violent incidents during Wednesday night's protest, where the emergency department of RG Kar Hospital was attacked, and several facilities, including the ticket counter, HCCU (Hybrid Critical Care Unit), CCU (Critical Care Unit), and medicine storeroom, were vandalized.

According to Lalbazar Police Station, the ban aims to prevent any recurrence of the violence witnessed during the protests. The police have stated that any gathering of five or more people in the restricted area that threatens public peace will be met with appropriate action.
