Protesters in Tel Aviv march with symbolic coffins demanding action from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as tensions continue over Gaza ceasefire negotiations. Demonstrators criticize Netanyahu's handling of the hostage crisis and call for decisive steps to end the conflict.
Gaza, Sep 06, (V7N) – Amid ongoing conflict, Hamas has called on the United States to increase pressure on Israel to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza. This plea comes as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denied the existence of any imminent agreement.
Hamas's lead negotiator, Khalil al-Hayya, criticized the U.S. for what he described as "blind bias" towards Israel and urged Washington to force a resolution. Despite these calls, Netanyahu remains firm, stating that “there is no deal in the making” and emphasizing Israel’s need to maintain control over the Philadelphi Corridor to prevent weapon smuggling into Gaza.
The corridor's control is a key point of contention. Hamas demands a full Israeli withdrawal, arguing that Netanyahu’s stance is obstructing a potential agreement. The group claims that an earlier truce proposal, endorsed by President Biden, remains valid and that further negotiations are unnecessary.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has expressed hope that a resolution is within reach, noting that “90 percent is agreed” but urging both sides to resolve the remaining issues.
Domestically, Netanyahu faces mounting criticism, particularly following the deaths of six hostages found in Gaza tunnels. Critics, including Gil Dickmann, have accused Netanyahu of failing to make necessary concessions, with protests in Tel Aviv calling for decisive action to secure a ceasefire.
Qatar, a key mediator in the conflict, has criticized Israel’s approach as misleading, warning that such tactics could jeopardize peace efforts.
The conflict, which began with a Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, has resulted in significant casualties on both sides. According to Israeli figures, 1,205 people were killed in the attack, with 97 hostages still held in Gaza. The Israeli offensive has led to at least 40,878 fatalities in Gaza, predominantly women and children.
In the West Bank, Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant has urged a robust military response against Palestinian militants. Recent Israeli airstrikes in the Tubas area have resulted in multiple casualties, further escalating tensions.
Additionally, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza has led to the resurgence of polio, prompting an urgent vaccination campaign. Despite efforts to vaccinate 640,000 children, access issues could hinder the drive’s effectiveness.
The situation remains dire, with ongoing military actions and diplomatic efforts struggling to bring about a lasting resolution.
