ISLAMABAD, Sep 09 (V7N) - Supporters of Pakistan’s imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan took to the streets on Sunday, staging a large rally on the outskirts of Islamabad to demand his release. Khan has been incarcerated for over a year, facing more than 150 legal cases which he and his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), claim are politically driven.

The demonstration, marking one of the largest organized by PTI this year, unfolded largely without incident, though there were brief skirmishes between police and some participants. Authorities had preemptively restricted access to key areas by deploying shipping containers to hinder the arrival of Khan's supporters.

In response to the police's actions, Khan’s spokesman, Zulfi Bukhari, condemned the force used against what he described as "peaceful" protesters.

Addressing the crowd, Ali Amin, the leading official from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, issued a stern warning to the government, demanding Khan's release within two weeks. Amin expressed confidence that Khan would soon be freed, despite the former Prime Minister’s continued imprisonment since his 2023 arrest and conviction in a corruption case.
