Moroni, Sep 14 (V7N) – Azali Assoumani, the President of Comoros, was injured in a knife attack on Friday, suffering minor wounds, according to sources close to the government. The incident occurred in the Salimani-i-Tasandra area, on the outskirts of the capital Moroni, while the president was attending a funeral.

Government spokesperson Fatima Ahmadel confirmed the attack, assuring that the president is out of danger. Additional sources indicated that the assailant, a young gendarme recruited in 2022, was apprehended shortly after the attack.

President Assoumani, 65, a former military ruler, first came to power in a 1999 coup. He was re-elected earlier this year in a controversial vote, amid accusations of increasing authoritarianism. Despite the attack, officials confirmed that Assoumani received prompt medical attention and remains in stable condition.

The motive for the attack remains unclear, and authorities are investigating the incident.
