Dhaka, Oct 05 (V7N): Experts criticized the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, labeling it a "white elephant" symbolizing the Awami League government's mismanagement and corruption in Bangladesh's energy sector.

During a regional dialogue titled "Dialogue for Democratic Reconstruction," organized by the Centre for Governance Studies (CGS) at Hotel Agrabad in Chattogram, economist Dr. Muinul Islam from Chittagong University highlighted the inefficiencies surrounding the Rooppur project and controversial energy deals with the Adani Group.

Dr. Islam argued that these initiatives have turned into significant financial burdens, wasting resources without yielding the anticipated benefits. He called for urgent governance reforms, including constitutional changes to balance power between the prime minister and president.

Supporting this stance, Professor Nizam Uddin Ahmed emphasized the importance of reforms to protect fundamental rights and prevent future administrations from altering the constitution for political gains after elections.

Zillur Rahman, executive director of CGS, added that governance setbacks should not lead to despair, urging continued efforts toward democratic progress and inclusive governance.

This dialogue marks the beginning of a CGS-led series addressing democratic reforms and governance across Bangladesh.
