Dhaka, Oct 28 (V7N)- In a significant move to streamline the income tax process in Bangladesh, Chief Advisor of the interim government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, announced on Monday that citizens can now pay their taxes and submit returns from the comfort of their homes. The new system eliminates the need to visit income tax offices or banks, simplifying the process for taxpayers nationwide.

In a video message addressing the nation, Dr. Yunus highlighted the importance of taxes in driving the country’s economy and acknowledged the challenges taxpayers face in the traditional submission process. "From now on, you can deposit income tax at home and file returns," he said, describing the change as a key development aimed at reducing taxpayer inconvenience.

The new system has been made mandatory for officials and employees in the cities of Dhaka, Narayanganj, and Gazipur, as well as all employees of scheduled banks, mobile operators, and various multinational organizations. Additionally, citizens across the country are encouraged to utilize the e-filing and online tax payment systems.

Dr. Yunus also proposed a new initiative to foster competition in tax compliance: district and city rankings based on online submission rates, with the top-performing regions eligible for state awards. This approach, he said, is designed to encourage greater participation in digital tax filing and support Bangladesh’s move toward a more efficient, transparent tax administration system.
