Dhaka, Nov 24 (V7N) – Renowned actor and social activist Ilias Kanchan has called for the inclusion of a no-vote option in elections, allowing voters to reject all candidates if none are deemed suitable.
Speaking at a meeting with the Election System Reform Commission and Nagorik Samaj at the Election Commission office in Agargaon on Sunday, Kanchan outlined three reform proposals aimed at enhancing the electoral process.
Key Proposals
- No-Vote Option: A mechanism for voters to express dissatisfaction with all candidates.
- Fast-Track Courts: Establishment of a judicial system within the Election Commission to expedite cases of electoral injustice, ensuring timely resolution before the elected term concludes.
- Transparency in EVM Use: Addressing misuse of funds in previous administrations, particularly in the procurement of electronic voting machines (EVMs), to restore public trust in the commission.
Kanchan stressed the need for the Election Commission to act transparently to regain public confidence, warning that failure to do so might perpetuate perceptions of a flawed system.
Proportional Representation Debates
The meeting also discussed differing opinions on the proportional representation system in elections.
Key attendees included Badiul Alam Majumdar, head of the Election System Reform Commission, along with members Md Abdul Alim, Jesmin Tuli, and others.
