Dhaka, Nov 30 (V7N) – Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed has emphasized the critical need to separate the judiciary from the executive branch to ensure the rule of law in the country.
Speaking at a workshop for newly-enrolled members of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) on Saturday at the SCBA building, the chief justice outlined recent initiatives aimed at bolstering judicial independence.
He noted that the power to remove judges has been shifted to a Supreme Judicial Council, replacing the parliament's previous role in this process. Furthermore, a formal proposal has been submitted to the government advocating the separation of the judiciary from the executive.
Addressing young lawyers, the chief justice highlighted the importance of integrity and collaborative efforts for judicial progress. “Institutional autonomy is essential for judicial independence. Young lawyers must strive to uphold the judiciary's dignity. The recent incidents on court premises demand greater responsibility from legal professionals. The judiciary will progress through the combined efforts of the bar and the bench,” he remarked.
The event commenced with a moment of silence in memory of Alif, a lawyer from the same batch, who tragically lost his life in Chittagong. Special prayers were also offered for the victims of the August 5 protests.
Distinguished attendees included Senior Appellate Division Justice Jubayer Rahman Chowdhury, High Court Justice Farah Mahbub, Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman, SCBA President Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon, and Nationalist Lawyers’ Forum President Advocate Zainul Abedin, among others.
