Dhaka, Dec 09 (V7N) – The interim government has called on the international community to reach a global consensus for the swift repatriation of Rohingyas to their homeland in Myanmar, describing it as an urgent necessity.
Dr. Khalilur Rahman, the high representative on Rohingya issues and priority affairs to the chief adviser, made the appeal during an international conference at the Doha Forum in Qatar.
“We urge the global community to unite in facilitating the timely repatriation of Rohingyas to Myanmar,” Dr. Khalilur stated, as quoted in a foreign ministry release.
Speaking during a session titled "Bangladesh at a Crossroads: Governance, Democratic Reforms, and the Post-Sheikh Hasina Trajectory," he highlighted Bangladesh's sustained humanitarian efforts over the past seven years, hosting nearly 1.2 million Rohingyas despite significant challenges.
The session began with a six-minute pre-recorded message from Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus, screened in the presence of Qatar’s minister of state for higher education.
Dr. Khalilur called for enhanced international collaboration to address the crisis and expressed optimism about a special UN conference on the Rohingya issue scheduled for next year, which he believes will expedite the repatriation process.
He also discussed the socio-political challenges in Bangladesh, including the aftermath of the July-August student-led uprising against the "fascist regime" of the deposed premier Sheikh Hasina. He described incidents of violence during the protests and emphasized the interim government’s commitment to rebuilding democracy and equality in the nation.
“The interim government is implementing systemic reforms. True progress will be achieved when children from all walks of life can aspire to lead the nation,” he added.
Dr. Khalilur further addressed Bangladesh-India relations, urging India to act as a responsible neighbor during Bangladesh's democratic transition and counter misinformation campaigns. He expressed hope that Monday’s foreign secretary-level meeting between the two nations would strengthen bilateral ties based on mutual respect.
