Dhaka, Dec 16 (V7N)- Today, the nation celebrates Victory Day with unprecedented enthusiasm, marking the 53rd anniversary of Bangladesh's independence on December 16, 1971, and the first commemoration since the historic ouster of Sheikh Hasina's regime on August 5, 2024.

This year’s celebrations carry a profound sense of renewal, with many referring to the fall of the previous government as the "second liberation." Citizens across Bangladesh are paying tribute to the sacrifices made during the War of Liberation and the recent mass movement that redefined the nation’s political landscape.

Victory Through Sacrifice

The overthrow of the authoritarian government earlier this year came at a significant cost. Hundreds lost their lives, over 700 people were blinded, and many sustained life-altering injuries. Thousands remain missing, while countless others suffer from the physical and emotional scars of the struggle.

The nation now takes a solemn pledge to honor the dreams of the Liberation War martyrs and the recent sacrifices made to restore democracy, justice, and equality in Bangladesh.

Tributes at the National Monument

Tens of thousands of citizens, representing various social groups, political parties, and cultural organizations, gathered at the National Monument in Savar to pay their respects.

President Muhammad Sahabuddin and Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus led the tributes, placing wreaths at the monument amid ceremonial honors. They were followed by representatives of political parties, socio-cultural organizations, and professional groups.

A 31-gun salute heralded the day’s celebrations, symbolizing the nation’s resilience and pride.

Nationwide Celebrations

  • The national flag is being hoisted across government and private establishments, and major landmarks are illuminated to commemorate the day.
  • Special prayers (milad and doa mahfils) and discussion meetings have been organized across the country to honor the sacrifices of martyrs.
  • Public offices and institutions are observing the day as a national holiday.

Messages of Unity and Progress

In his Victory Day message, President Muhammad Sahabuddin urged citizens to work together to build a nation free of corruption and exploitation, emphasizing the importance of fulfilling the dreams of the Liberation War. “Let us unite to build a prosperous and discrimination-free Bangladesh,” he stated.

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus echoed these sentiments, highlighting the day as both a source of pride and an opportunity to renew commitments to national sovereignty and the spirit of independence. “The sacrifices of our martyrs inspire us to remain united and ensure good governance for future generations,” he said.

Navy Honors

On this special occasion, the Bangladesh Navy has promoted 32 junior commissioned officers to honorary sub-lieutenants, recognizing their dedication and service to the nation.

A New Era of Hope

Victory Day 2024 symbolizes not only the historic achievements of 1971 but also the triumph of people’s power in recent times. Citizens remain optimistic about building a more equitable and prosperous Bangladesh, ensuring that the sacrifices of all who fought for freedom and justice will never be forgotten.

The day concludes with the nation reaffirming its collective commitment to progress, democracy, and unity.
