Dhaka, Jan 30 (V7N) – The interim government has expressed deep concern over recent incidents where women's recreational activities were obstructed, particularly two women's football matches that were disrupted.

In a statement issued by the Chief Advisor's Press Wing on Thursday (January 30) afternoon, the government strongly condemned these incidents and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring equal rights for all citizens, including women.

Government’s Firm Stand on Women’s Rights

The statement emphasized that women are equal citizens of Bangladesh, enjoying the same human and civil rights as men. It warned that anyone violating women's rights will face legal consequences, as the interim government has zero tolerance for discrimination or oppression.

As an immediate step, the Chief Advisor’s Office has directed the district administrations of Dinajpur and Joypurhat to take necessary measures to resume the suspended women’s football matches.

Women’s Sports and Government Initiatives

District officials reported that they have recently organized women’s football, cricket, and kabaddi matches, which were well-received by the local communities. The statement highlighted that in the past month, the interim government organized one of the largest youth festivals in Bangladesh, featuring various sports events for female athletes across rural districts and upazila towns.

Thousands of girls participated in these competitions, reinforcing the government's commitment to women’s empowerment through sports.

Professor Yunus’ Global Advocacy for Women's Football

The statement also noted that Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus has been a lifelong advocate for women's rights. Over 90% of Grameen Bank’s ownership—the microfinance institution he founded—belongs to women.

Last week, Professor Yunus met FIFA President Gianni Infantino and sought global support to improve infrastructure and facilities for female footballers in Bangladesh.

The interim government reaffirmed its stance that women’s participation in sports and recreational activities will not be obstructed, and that strict action will be taken against any attempt to suppress or discriminate against any citizen.
