Dhaka, Feb 2 (V7N) – The reclamation and depollution of 19 canals in Dhaka will be completed within this year, announced Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Advisor to the Ministry of Water Resources and Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Canal-Centric Blue Network in Baunia (behind Police Staff College) on Sunday, she said that efforts to restore six canals under Dhaka North and South City Corporations (DNCC and DSCC) are already underway.
"We aim to reclaim and depollute six canals before the monsoon, followed by four more soon after. The remaining nine canals will also see restoration work begin before the monsoon, ensuring that all 19 canals are cleaned and revived within this year," Rizwana Hasan stated.
Master Plan for Sustainable Restoration
The government is also considering a long-term master plan for these 19 canals to ensure sustainable restoration.
"This initiative will help us identify specific areas that need more work. Based on this, we will allocate funds in the next budget for a complete restoration," she added.
Greening and Reviving Aquatic Life in Canals
Rizwana Hasan emphasized that the project will not only reclaim the canals but also revive greenery along their banks and bring back aquatic life, including fish.
"We want to see if we can restore greenery along the canal banks and bring back fish. This effort is led by our ministry, but city residents must also play a role in protecting these canals," she urged.
Canals to be the "Heart of Dhaka"
Stressing the importance of revitalizing Dhaka's waterways, Rizwana Hasan said:
"The canals of Dhaka must be brought back to life. These canals will be the heart of the city."
This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve Dhaka’s drainage system, reduce waterlogging, and enhance urban biodiversity.
