Dhaka, Feb 2 (V7N) – The renovation of six major canals in Dhaka has officially begun, with three advisors of the interim government inaugurating the excavation work in a ceremony at Baunia Canal, Mirpur-13.

The event, held on Sunday (February 2), was attended by:

  • Syeda Rizwana Hasan – Advisor for Environment, Forest, Climate Change, and Water Resources
  • Adilur Rahman Khan – Advisor for Housing, Public Works, and Industries
  • Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan – Advisor for Local Government, Rural Development, Cooperatives, and Youth and Sports

A Step Towards Restoring 19 Canals

The excavation project is part of a larger initiative to restore 19 canals under Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC). The work has commenced with the renovation of six canals in the first phase, with the rest to follow in stages.

The six canals currently under renovation are:

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC)

  1. Baunia Canal
  2. Korail Canal
  3. Rupnagar Canal
  4. Begunbari Canal

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC)

  1. Manda Canal
  2. Kalunagar Canal

The initiative aims to reduce waterlogging, improve drainage systems, and restore urban waterways, making the canals more functional and environmentally sustainable.

Grand Inauguration on Red Carpet

The advisors walked down a red carpet to officially launch the excavation work, highlighting the significance of this project in Dhaka’s urban development.

More phases of canal restoration are set to follow, with authorities promising timely completion and long-term maintenance.
