Dhaka, Feb 09 (V7N) – The Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs has described India's recent remarks over the demolition of the historic Dhanmondi-32 residence as "unexpected and undesirable," emphasizing that the country's internal matters should not be subjected to external commentary.
Responding to a question on Sunday, Ministry Spokesperson Mohammad Rafiqul Alam stated, "This statement by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs on the internal affairs of Bangladesh is unexpected and undesirable. We have seen various adverse situations in neighboring countries, but Bangladesh does not officially make any statement on the internal affairs of any state."
Alam stressed that Bangladesh expects the same courtesy from other nations, adding, "As you know, the former Prime Minister has been making political statements at various times while staying in India, which is not being received well by the people of Bangladesh."
The spokesperson also highlighted that the interim government had already clarified its position regarding the events at Dhanmondi-32, following a statement on February 5.
India's Reaction to the Demolition
Earlier, Indian Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal condemned the demolition, stating, "It is regrettable that the historic residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, a symbol of the heroic resistance of the people of Bangladesh against the forces of occupation and oppression, was destroyed on February 5."
Jaiswal added that the vandalism should be "strongly condemned" as the residence holds significant historical value tied to Bangladesh's freedom struggle and national identity.
Bangladesh's Interim Government Responds
The interim government termed the vandalism at the Dhanmondi-32 residence as "unfortunate and unexpected," attributing it to public anger provoked by "provocative remarks" made by fugitive Sheikh Hasina from India against the July uprising.
In its Thursday statement, the interim government urged India to ensure its territory is not used to promote instability in Bangladesh and to prevent Sheikh Hasina from issuing further inflammatory remarks.
The ongoing diplomatic tension reflects a growing strain between the two neighbors amid political turbulence in Bangladesh.
