Dhaka, Feb 15 (V7N) – The timing of Bangladesh’s next parliamentary elections will depend on the ‘July Charter’, said Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to the Chief Advisor of the interim government.
Speaking to journalists on Saturday afternoon, ahead of the National Consensus Commission’s dialogue with political parties at the Foreign Service Academy, Shafiqul Alam explained that the six reform commissions will submit their reports, which will then be discussed with political parties.
‘July Charter’ to Shape Democratic Transition
“The political parties will reach a consensus based on the recommendations of the reform commissions. Once finalized, all parties will sign the agreement, which will be known as the ‘July Charter’,” said Alam.
He emphasized that this charter will determine the political roadmap and electoral timeline following the July mass uprising that led to the fall of the previous government.
Election Expected by December
The Press Secretary reiterated that Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has indicated that elections are likely by December 2025.
“In that case, some of the recommendations can be implemented before the election, while the newly elected government will oversee the rest of the reforms,” he added.
The National Consensus Commission, formed by the interim government, aims to build national unity and set the foundation for democratic transition in Bangladesh.
