Dhaka, Feb 18 (V7N) – Professor Asif Nazrul, legal advisor to the interim government, has accused the former Awami League government of using District Commissioners (DCs) as tools of oppression against the people.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday afternoon after the final working session of the three-day District Commissioners' Conference, Nazrul emphasized the importance of ensuring that such practices are never repeated.

Nazrul stated that clear instructions have been given to DCs to strictly adhere to policy, law, and the constitution to prevent the misuse of administrative power in the future. He noted that if the law is properly followed, people will receive better services from their local administrations.

"Our DCs are among the most talented individuals in the country, selected through competitive exams," Nazrul said. "However, the last government exploited their skills and authority to suppress dissent and conceal its own misdeeds."

Nazrul expressed hope that future elected governments will never use the country's administration to oppress citizens. Instead, he urged that DCs be utilized for public service, including law enforcement, land management, and healthcare improvements.

"We must ensure that the state’s administrative resources are used for serving the people, as stated in our constitution," he added.

With the new administration restructuring governance, Nazrul’s comments highlight ongoing efforts to restore accountability and prevent political misuse of state institutions.
