Dhaka, April 5, (V7N) – Although there has been concern among exporters in various sectors, including the garment industry, due to the 37% tariff increase on Bangladeshi products in the United States, the government sees this not as a crisis but as an opportunity, according to the Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam.
"The government will take all necessary steps to increase exports globally," he said on Saturday during an emergency meeting held at the State Guest House Jamuna regarding the US tariff hike.
The meeting was chaired by Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus.
Before the meeting, Shafiqul Alam told reporters: "You can rest assured that after today's discussion, a decision will be made that will increase Bangladesh's exports to the United States and other Western countries, not decrease them."
He informed that earlier on Saturday, a long meeting had been held with the country's top businesspeople at the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority.
During this meeting, proposals and suggestions were gathered from the exporters, he added.
The press secretary continued: "They (the businesspeople) are the ones who export. Their suggestions will be analyzed in today's meeting. After a detailed analysis, the government will make business-friendly decisions."
He further said: "We are confident that this initiative will increase our exports and strengthen Bangladesh's position in the international market."
He concluded by saying: "We will benefit even more from the new global trade order."
