Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina emphasized on Sunday that her government is modernizing the Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) into a contemporary and versatile force equipped with advanced smart technologies, ships, and helicopters to tackle the challenges of the 21st century.
Addressing a ceremony commemorating the 29th founding anniversary of the BCG and BCG Day-2024 at the Coast Guard Headquarters in Agargaon, she underscored the government's commitment to equip the coast guard with modern technology-based ships, helicopters, and improved communication systems to meet contemporary challenges effectively.
Sheikh Hasina announced plans to integrate a high-quality modern ship, a maritime surveillance system-incorporated hovercraft, and high-speed boats into the coast guard fleet to enhance its modernity and strength.
During the event, the prime minister inaugurated the Bangladesh Coast Guard Vsatnet Communication System and six newly constructed physical infrastructures at BCG stations located in Kutubdia, Maheshkhali, Mirsarai, Sandwip, Nidraskina, and Shahpari Outpost.
The integration of the V-Satnet Communication System, linking the coast guard with the Bangabandhu Satellite-1, is expected to significantly improve the force's communication and operational capabilities.
Sheikh Hasina announced the government's approval to procure two helicopters and establish an aviation wing for the Coast Guard to elevate it into a three-dimensional force.
Additionally, she disclosed plans to acquire four additional Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) and two maritime version helicopters for patrolling deep sea areas and ensuring safety and security.
The prime minister highlighted the importance of securing Bangladesh's extensive maritime borders, given that 90% of businesses are conducted through marine routes.
She further stated that the government has sanctioned the construction of nine replacement ships for the force and has already added 16 ships and 138 boats to strengthen its fleet.
Sheikh Hasina affirmed the government's commitment to gradually increase the force's manpower to 15,000 while modernizing its capabilities to enhance security in vast sea areas and protect maritime resources.
